Compact in footprint. Uncompromising in finish.

The M-01 is where the Random Hare approach starts. At 13.7m² it fits most gardens without planning permission under Permitted Development, but it doesn't feel small. Every decision, from the structural birch ply interior to the slim steel frame, is made to make the space feel more considered, not less.

It arrives as a finished shell with all electrics and delivery included. From there, you choose which facilities you'd like to include: take all of them, or any combination that suits your brief.

Most M-01 clients use it as a home office or creative studio. Some use it as a guest bedroom. A few have turned it into a rental. The brief is yours.

If your project requires planning permission, we can recommend experienced local architects or work alongside your architect of choice.

Materials

WHAT IT’S
MADE OF.

We offer a curated set of exterior and interior material choices to guide the design. These are the options we know perform well and age beautifully. If you have something else in mind, we can work with it: that becomes a bespoke design conversation.

Exterior cladding

Western red cedar is our default and most popular choice. Naturally resistant to rot and insects, it requires no treatment. Left untreated it silvers gradually to a soft grey. Warm, light-weight, and dimensionally stable even in the Sussex climate.

Standard choiceFSC certifiedNo treatment required

Weathering steel that forms a stable, rust-like patina as a protective surface layer, eliminating the need for painting or further treatment. It gives the M-02 a distinctly industrial and architectural character. Extremely durable, with a lifespan measured in decades. Note: initial weathering can run slightly; discuss placement near light-coloured surfaces.

No maintenance60+ year lifespanArchitectural finish

Scots pine is a more affordable cladding option with a lighter, more traditional timber appearance. It benefits from a treatment coat every five to seven years and weathers to a warm golden tone if left. Works well where a softer, more rustic aesthetic is wanted.

FSC certifiedPeriodic treatmentClassic timber look

An ancient Japanese technique of charring timber to carbonise the surface. The result is dramatically beautiful: a deep black finish with visible wood grain. The charred layer is naturally resistant to fire, rot, UV and insects, making it one of the most durable cladding finishes available. We apply this to cedar or pine.

Interior finish

Structural birch ply is our most-used interior finish and what you see in our cabin stays. The face veneer is pale and smooth with a fine, consistent grain. It reads as warm and resolved without being showy, and it handles knocks and life far better than painted plasterboard. Used across walls, ceiling, and floor.

Default choiceStructuralWarm + precise

A broader category covering species like poplar, okume, and hardwood-faced ply. Slightly different aesthetic to birch: more visible knots and grain variation depending on species. A good option where texture and character are wanted over the cleaner birch face.

Character finishSpecies selected per project

Tongue-and-groove Radiata pine boards give a classic cabin interior: knotty, textured, and warm. It reads very differently from ply, giving a more traditional Scandinavian or alpine feel. Can be left natural, oiled, or painted. Works especially well on ceilings.

Classic cabin feelNatural or paintedGreat on ceilings

Sourced from demolished structures, old school gyms, industrial buildings and barn conversions. Every board has a history. The character varies depending on source, but it is always warm, always rich, and impossible to replicate with new materials. Our cabin stays use reclaimed timber throughout. Uses reclaimed material reduces embodied carbon significantly.

Our curated list covers the materials we know work well and can specify confidently. If you have a particular material in mind that isn't listed, that's not a problem: it simply becomes a bespoke design conversation at the start of the project. We'll assess it for performance, longevity, and compatibility with the M-02 structure and advise accordingly.

Sustainability
  • Timber from FSC-certified sources only
  • Off-site construction reduces site waste by up to 70% compared to a traditional site build
  • High-performance PIR insulation achieves a U-value of 0.18 W/m²K, well within Part L building regulations
  • Cork insulation available as an upgrade: the only insulation material with a verified negative carbon footprint (−596 kg CO²/m³). Cork oak bark is harvested every nine years without felling the tree. The harvested tree absorbs three to five times more CO² than an unharvested one, making cork production an active carbon sequestration process. No resins, no binders, 100% natural.
  • M-01 can be conjoined with an M-02 without additional planning in most cases
  • Crane-set delivery: one day on site, minimal ground disturbance
  • Materials chosen for longevity, not trend
70%

Less construction waste than a traditional site build, because the M-01 is built entirely in our workshop.

kg CO² per m³: the verified negative carbon footprint of cork insulation — the only insulation material in the market with a negative carbon balance.
